This evening, I passed my eye exam with flying colors (and lots of corrective glass). Seriously though, my eyesight has not changed much in the almost six years. I'm pretty excited about that.
Anyway, onto something that has nothing to do with my eyesight. As I sit here considering everything I experienced and may have learned during my day, it occurs to me that I want to ensure this blog does not end up being some documentation of random junk or a year's worth of pictures of a cup of coffee (that is what Instagram is for, right?). I hope to impart some kind of uplifting and helpful information and insight for those reading along, and to capture moments and ideas I can reflect on next year.
So here it is. THE important stuff... Wait for it...
Be warned, I might catch some flack over this (I guess that should be a warning to myself).
It struck me today that we as Christians need to do all we can to get out of God's way when He is using us to reach others. It is also just as important not to get distracted by what God uses to get our attention, pour into us and show us His love.
Conferences are good, organized and corporate worship is good, and dynamic speakers are good. All are important and are used by God to reach people (including myself). Actually, I've been watching the Passion 2013 conference over the past couple of days and it has been powerful. The hype and potential for idolizing conferences, worship leaders and dynamic speakers is the part that I think gets in the way. So many times I have heard myself or others get all worked up about a person, a band, a ministry, even a church (that's a whole different blog) to the point that we almost forget the purpose for the person, band, ministry, etc. When you break that down, it's like getting more excited about the road you are going to drive on to get to visit your most loved person in the entire world than you are about seeing him or her because the pavement is really cool.
Again, I want to reiterate that I firmly believe God uses conferences, speakers, bands and churches in powerful and mighty ways to reach a lost and dying world, but today I was reminded that I need to always check my motives to ensure I am not loving the Potter's wheel more than the Potter.
